Analysis
OpenAI’s October 16 customer account says Itaú’s conversational banking interface, ia.i, initially reached approximately 300,000 customers. Availability across the customer base remains a goal for the end of 2026. OpenAI also describes IARA, the bank’s model-governance and orchestration platform, as supporting multiple providers, monitoring, policy enforcement and cost control.
Our analysis: expansion should be assessed through the quality of service it produces. A useful evaluation would ask whether customers complete the task they came to do, understand the outcome and can obtain help when the exchange fails. The account does not independently establish those outcomes or the financial suitability of the interface’s responses.
Governance becomes a business asset when it supports decisions that can be examined and corrected. For a banking service, we would look for a defined path from a detected error to investigation, customer assistance and a change in behavior. The existence of a control should prompt a question about how its effectiveness will be measured.
The incentive structure deserves equal attention. If speed and service costs are the easiest results to count, customer confusion could receive too little weight. A stronger business case would include successful resolutions, avoidable repeat contacts and the expense of handling failures. These are proposed tests; their value lies in making service quality part of the expansion decision.
