Analysis
Mistral released the weights of Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, on October 29. The trillion-parameter multimodal model had already entered public preview earlier in the month. This release makes an improved version available for organizations to download and operate themselves, alongside hosted access. Mistral says the model was trained in Europe and presents control over deployment as a central reason to choose it.
The company reports advances in coding and defensive cybersecurity, including a 48% result on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index with lower token use than a leading open-weight rival. Three reasoning settings offer another performance and cost choice. Those results make a case for evaluation; the operating economics still depend on the workload, serving configuration and quality of the finished work.
For a software team, ownership becomes practical at the point where something goes wrong. Who can reproduce an agent’s mistake? Which version produced the patch? Can a maintainer stop a run, inspect its access and restore an earlier deployment? Downloadable weights give the operator more room to answer those questions, while also giving that operator more work to do.
The useful comparison is therefore a complete development task: identify a defect, propose a change, run the relevant checks and leave a reviewable record. Measure elapsed time and accepted changes alongside inference consumption. A model that generates fewer tokens but demands more human repair may not save much. Le Chonk widens the available choices; disciplined operation determines what that choice is worth.

Why it matters
Open weights make infrastructure, maintenance and oversight part of the model decision.
